Lightning Policy

March 25, 2001

Richardson Soccer Association has purchased and, with the assistance of The City of Richardson, installed a Lightning Detection System at Breckinridge Park. The system is manufactured by Thorguard.

The system will run from 8 AM to 5 PM, 7 days a week and is solar powered. When lightning is detected, a horn will sound for 15 seconds and a light will begin to flash. The light will stay on until no more lightning is detected at which time the alarm will produce 3 blasts. The light will go off when the disturbance has passed and it is safe to resume play.

When the alarm sounds, all people should leave the grass area and go to a parking area until the light goes off. The Richardson Soccer Association does not have enough volunteers to come to each individual field to tell the players, parents and coaches to clear the field. The adults at each field are responsible for understanding the signals from the Lightning Detection System and to clear the fields on their own as quickly as possible.

Two detection systems have been installed; one on the A Complex and one on the B Complex, each near the restrooms of their respective areas.

The Richardson Soccer Association membership voted to allocate the $14,000 to purchase the Thorguard system with funds from the general operating account. This investment has been made in an effort to provide a safer environment for our children. We would appreciate your help in spreading the word about this system and how it works.

Help us protect our investment. This equipment was installed to protect you and your children. If you see anyone climbing on or damaging the equipment, please call the police immediately.
